Complements the existing cinematic complex at The Zone @ Rosebank

Johannesburg, 01 September 2015 – Rosebank’s first food court, a 2 000m2 indoor food emporium on the first floor of The Zone @ Rosebank, with panoramic views over western Johannesburg, and a balcony on Oxford Road, has opened.

A milestone in the R500-million revamp of the suburb’s hub for fashion, food and entertainment, the new food court, dubbed Food @ The Zone, enables moviegoers, families and entertainment-lovers to relax in a stunning open-plan self-serve dining space, with access to some of South Africa’s favourite fast-food vendors and sit-down restaurants, including Panarotti’s, Spur, Simply Asia, Wakaberry, Sweets From Heaven, Jimmy’s Killer Prawns and Haagen Dazs.

“The new food court will revitalise the movie area of The Zone @ Rosebank with its abundance of natural light, natural and earthy colours, slick seating and granite tables, and soft backlit wallpaper and mosaic tiling,” says Nqaba Mangcu, project architect of Louis Karol Architects, who were responsible for the refit. “Shoppers will also have access to a smart-connect area with wifi, TV and desk plugs.”

Our intention with the new area, Food @ The Zone, is to enhance the family appeal of The Zone @ Rosebank, and add more leisure facilities to the existing cinema complex, so that families and moviegoers can really enjoy a full outing,” says Desmond Heunis, regional general manager for Old Mutual Property. “The Zone @ Rosebank is now able to cater for a broad entertainment-loving market.”

Project construction began towards the end of last year, with the development team being careful not to disrupt the trading environment by fast-tracking the rollout period and ensuring existing services operated as normal. Louis Karol’s CEO Eitan Karol says, “It’s never easy to build within an existing building that’s not only still trading but is in a part of a mall that links all the shopping and offices in Rosebank, but with our 63 years of experience in large-scale commercial redevelopment, we’ve been able to handle this fairly seamlessly.”

One of the largest and most eminent architectural firms in the country, Louis Karol has been responsible for the design and construction of some of South Africa’s most-admired buildings and developments, including the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and the Sandton International Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

Marking a milestone in the progression of phase one of the redevelopment, shoppers will soon be able to enjoy a new mixed-use retail/office space in the former Standard Bank building on Tyrwhitt Avenue. The ground floor will host a variety of restaurants, and will also serve as a green space where outside seating and the piazza-style ambiance will be extended in the already vibrant Rosebank precinct. The first and second floors will be remodelled into office space of approximately 2 200m2, with a spectacular atrium letting natural light in to both floors. The space will be ready for hand over to new tenants from later this month (September).

The Zone @ Rosebank gets a R500 million facelift

Johannesburg, 29th May 2015 – The Zone@Rosebank, one of Joburg’s trendiest lifestyle destinations, has begun its R500 million revamp, boosting the wide appeal of this precinct, which was enhanced by the large-scale makeover of its neighbour, Rosebank Mall.

Owner, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company South Africa, has been investing in the redevelopment of its properties within this vibrant Rosebank hub over several years. Cradock Square - anchored by a flagship Game store, was completed at the end of 2011.

The Zone@Rosebank will be elevated to beyond a shopping experience. It is positioning itself as a lifestyle brand that offers a plethora of other attractions including art and design, innovation and ultimately, a ‘vibe’ that inspires people to dream, aspire and reflect.

Situated between Cradock Avenue and Oxford Road, ‘The Zone’, as patrons fondly call it, consists of five buildings with two levels of retail space, a hotel and a 2-storey office tower complex. It is well established as a shopping, dining and nightlife destination for a broad cross-section of people living north and south of central Joburg including young and middle-aged urban professionals, families and teens. There are five levels of underground parking, which can be reached from both Oxford Road and Cradock Avenue.

Fashion, footwear and beauty lead The Zone’s youthful appeal. Tenants include Diesel, Guess, Sissy Boy, YDE, Space, Republik, Big Blue and Sunglass Hut. Then there’s Sorbet, MAC Cosmetics, Africology Urban Spa and Carlton Hair. Entertainment-wise, there is The Fun Company, offering family entertainment, and on the first level is Ster Kinekor, including the first Cine Prestige to launch in Gauteng.

Redevelopment plans include a new Food Court of about 1600sqm, due to launch in August. Among the new tenants adding to the existing mix of Wakaberry, Spur and Mikes Kitchen are Panarottis, Jimmy’s Killer Prawns, Simply Asia and Haagen Dazs to name a few. New anchor tenants on the ground floor will include a Super Spar of over 3500sqm and Viva Gym, the popular UK headquartered gym that debuted in Fourways Crossing and in Hillfox last year. They will begin marketing in July and are expected to open their doors to the public during early September.

The former Standard Bank building is to be transformed into a mixed-use retail/office space. The ground floor will host a variety of restaurants, which will spill out with seating onto the extension of Tyrwhitt “mall”. This paved mall will also serve as a green space where functions and entertainment can be added to the already vibrant Rosebank precinct.

The upper area of the building will be remodeled into office space of approximately 2200sqm, with a spectacular atrium leading natural light into both floors. The space will be ready for hand over to new tenants from August 2015.

The Zone compliments neighbouring The Firs and Rosebank Mall, as well as other sub-regional centres including Killarney Mall, Melrose Arch, Norwood Mall and Hyde Park.
